Wilcox, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Wilcox is a founding
member and Chairman of the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board, which was formed
in 1998. Since 1994, he has served as Chief, Division of Nephrology and
Hypertension and Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center
in Washington, D.C. From 1984 to 1994, he was the Chief, Division of Nephrology
and Hypertension, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and a Professor
of Medicine at the University of Florida. Prior to that time, Dr. Wilcox taught
at Harvard Medical School, Yale Medical School, and London University (U.K.).
Dr. Wilcox is recognized as a world leader in nephrology and hypertension. His
research interests are in tubuloglomerular feedback response; the
renin-angiotensin, prostaglandin and thromboxane systems; treatment modalities
for hypertension; renovascular hypertension; arginine-derived nitric oxide and
agmatine; molecular biology of nitric oxide synthase, thromboxane synthase and
arginine decarboxlase; and oxygen free-radicals in regulation of renal and
vascular function. Dr. Wilcox delivered the Lewis K. Dahl Memorial Lecture on
his research with Tempol and its effect on lowering blood pressure at the
2000 American Heart Association annual meeting.
Dr. Wilcox graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Physiology, Bachelor of Medicine
and Bachelor of Chemistry degrees from Oxford University (U.K.) and M.D. and
Ph.D. degrees from London University and did his internship and residency at the
Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London. He has been the recipient of
fellowships from Middlesex Hospital, National Kidney Foundation of the National
Capital Area, Veterans Affairs, and NIH. Dr. Wilcox has received numerous honors
and awards, and has received administrative appointments from NIH, National
Kidney Foundation, American Society of Nephrology, American Heart Association,
American Society for Hypertension, American Society for Clinical Investigation,
American Physiological Society, Medical Research Society, and International
Society for ACE Inhibition. Dr. Wilcox is the author of 60 articles, seven books
and over 130 abstracts. His most recent book, co-authored with Dr. Hugh R.
Brady, Therapy of Nephrology and Hypertension, is a companion
textbook to Brenner and Rector’s The Kidney.
