Tempol is in preclinical development. Placebo-controlled animal studies have shown that Tempol administration protects beating cardiomyocytes from ischemic or oxidative damage, prevents cardiac damage during ischemia-reperfusion injury (a model of heart attack), limits cerebral damage following ligation of a carotid artery (a model of stroke), preserves kidney function in a model of severe hypertension, and diminishes tissue damage and DNA scission from oxidative stress.
